Erdogan, Armenian Premier Discuss Peace Initiatives
(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan engaged in talks regarding peace efforts in the South Caucasus with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Monday during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in China, as reported by the Turkish Communications Directorate.
The discussion focused on Türkiye-Armenia relations, particularly considering measures aimed at achieving lasting stability and peace in the South Caucasus region, the directorate stated on the Turkish social media site NSosyal.
Erdogan conveyed his contentment with the advancements made in the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace negotiations and affirmed that Türkiye remains committed to fostering peace, stability, and growth in the area while actively supporting the ongoing process.
He also mentioned that Ankara is assessing initiatives to enhance collaboration between Türkiye and Armenia.
Erdogan arrived in China on Sunday and held bilateral discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that same day.
The 25th SCO summit commenced on Monday with an opening speech by President Xi.
Originally formed as the "Shanghai Five"—a coalition of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan before Uzbekistan joined as the sixth member—the SCO today consists of 10 member countries, two observers, and 14 dialogue partners spanning Asia, Europe, and Africa.
The organization encompasses around 24% of the world’s landmass and 42% of the global population.
Its member nations represent approximately one-quarter of the global GDP, with trade among them growing nearly 100 times over the last twenty years.
