Russia Says Ukraine Sea Attacks Aim to Derail Peace Talks
Zakharova addressed journalists at a St. Petersburg news conference, claiming Ukraine disregarded objections from Türkiye and Kazakhstan while persisting with operations aimed at sinking Russian ships.
"Apparently, Kyiv ignored the unequivocal reaction from Ankara and Astana, sanctioning on December 1 a new attack using unmanned boats on a Russian commercial vessel, which was located 80 nautical miles from the Black Sea coast of Türkiye," she said.
While the vessel's crew and structure escaped severe damage, Moscow has categorized these incidents as "terrorist attacks," she added.
On Dec. 2, the Russian commercial ship Midvolga 2 came under drone assault 80 nautical miles off the Turkish coastline, suffering minimal damage. Days earlier, on Nov. 28, the oil tankers Kairos and Virat were struck 28 and 38 nautical miles from the Turkish shore respectively, triggering onboard fires and hull breaches.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Dec. 1 that such maritime attacks represent a troubling escalation and cannot be justified.
