Israel Names First Envoy to Somaliland, Sparking Diplomatic Backlash
According to an official statement, Michael Lotem has been assigned as a non-resident ambassador to Somaliland.
Lotem has previously held diplomatic posts in Kenya, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, based on information from reports.
The development follows Israel’s announcement in December 2025 of mutual recognition with Somaliland, a decision that drew strong opposition from Somalia’s government and criticism from numerous countries.
Somaliland has operated as a self-governing entity since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, though it has not gained formal international recognition. The central government in Mogadishu does not exercise authority over the region, while Somaliland’s leadership has yet to secure global acknowledgment of its sovereignty.
Authorities in Somalia continue to reject Somaliland’s claim to independence, maintaining that the region remains part of its national territory. They also view any direct diplomatic engagement or agreements involving Somaliland as a breach of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
